Making an impact

Individual and family giving

Workplace giving enables you to regularly donate directly from your pre-tax pay to Hands Across Canberra through your employer’s automated payroll system. Donations are deducted directly from your pay, making it simple for you while also minimising administration costs for the organisation you donate to, therefore maximising benefits for the community.

Further information on workplace giving is available on the Australian Taxation Office website.

Hands Across Canberra would also be happy to visit your workplace and discuss workplace giving with your colleagues.  To arrange a meeting or presentation email info@handsacrosscanberra.org.au.

Start giving today in 3 easy steps

Step 1

Let your Human Resources Department or Payroll Department know that you would like to participate in workplace giving with Hands Across Canberra and ask them for a Workplace Giving Form. If this does not exist, contact us – we are happy to support your HR/Payroll Department.

Step 2

Complete the form and hand it back to the relevant HR/Payroll Department.  This allows them to deduct the amount you have opted for from your pay.

Step 3

Contact us and let us know you’ve started workplace giving!

Volunteers play an extremely important role for Hands Across Canberra and the many organisations we work with. Since 2011, we have been very fortunate to receive the support of many volunteers without whom we couldn’t do the work we do. There are many ways that you can volunteer for Hands Across Canberra. Share your professionall skills with us or help out at an event.

If you’re interested in volunteering with us please contact us.

You too can raise money for Canberran’s in need, this could be through organising your own fundraising event, collecting donations in celebration or in memory of someone, placing donation tins at home, in your business or shop. There are many ways you could help us raise funds. We’ve listed a few ideas below:

Fundraising ideas:

  • Host an event and invite friends and family to buy a ticket to that event. This could be a lunch, bbq, ball, trivia night, cocktail party or screening of a movie.
  • A sport challenge: Join an existing competition,  set up a local walk, run, cycle or swim course to challenge family, friends and neighbours or organise an ‘-athon’ for example a walk-a-thon to raising funds for your community.
  • Get your neighbourhood, school, or workplace involved and organise a bake sale.
  • Have friends and family sponsor you to give something up.
  • Ask for donations instead of gifts for your birthday, wedding or other special occasion.
  • Put a donation tin in your shop, business or home to help us raise funds. We will supply you with our logo.
  • Remember your loved one by asking family and friends for donations instead of flowers.
  • Collect donations for Hands Across Canberra at your event ie. bucket collections, raffle or auction.

Hands Across Canberra’s named funds are a wonderful and effective way of giving back to the community and getting directly involved in philanthropy, without the cost and administration of starting your own charitable trust or private foundation.

You may wish to create a named fund to support a cause dear to you, in memory of a loved one, as a way of demonstrating impactful CSR, or simply because you want to make a difference in your community.

You can establish your own named fund for as little as $10,000. This can be done immediately or later through your estate or will.

It’s easy to set up your fund, just follow these two steps:

1. Choose from 2 types of named funds:

  • Community advised funds: Community advised funds are channelled together to maximise impact in the areas our community needs most support with. Every year Hands Across Canberra assesses where the need is greatest with the community through consultations, expert advice and evaluations.  The organisations close connection to the community, means that your funds will reach the areas and issues that need the most support through the annual grant programmes.
  • Designated funds: a designated fund allows you to name charities or causes that you wish to support in perpetuity through annual grant payments.

All contributions to a fund are tax deductible and will benefit charities, organisations or causes working in Canberra and the region that have a tax-deductible Gift recipient status (DGR1).

2. Ask us for the Named Fund Application Form, fill it out and make your first donation. Donors can remain anonymous or choose their level of involvement and online profile.

Benefits of a Hands Across Canberra named fund:

  • Efficiency: avoid unnecessary cost and time on investing, reporting and administering your endowment. Hands Across Canberra is responsible on behalf of the named fund for all the administration, reporting and governance as required by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.
  • Responsible growth: As a sub-fund of Hands Across Canberra, your fund benefits from professional investment management with particular emphasis on socially and environmentally friendly investing practices.
  • Impact: Together with other named funds, we can make a bigger, deeper and more targeted impact in the community. Named fundholders benefit from Hands Across Canberrra’s close connection to the community, local knowledge and understanding of the charitable sector with over nine years of experience.
  • One gift, forever: donations invested in named funds will benefit the community forever
  • Trust: As the named fund is part of Hands Across Canberra’s trusted, audited and established infrastructure, you can rest assured that your gift is in good hands.

Thank you for supporting the work of Hands Across Canberra. For more information about setting up a named fund don’t hesitate to contact us.
